Chapter Thirteen
We landed at Salt Lake International a few hours later. From the air the place looked amazing. The city was spread out beneath some of the biggest mountains I'd ever seen. The soaring, snow-capped peaks made the puny hills of Southern California look like a little kid's sandbox creation.
To keep our numbers a little more manageable, and to be safe, Heidi stayed back at HQ with Ellen. It wasn't that she wouldn't be useful, especially when it came to identifying any science-y stuff at the warehouse, but with her new tendency to accidentally explode, we thought it better if she watched over a feed.
We did get Wyatt to join us though. Lucy dressed in a 'men in black' type suit and video-called his parents. Oddly, Wyatt's parents kept calling her Agent Carter.
"Shut it," she said, when Morgan and I had snickered at her appearance.
So, when we touched down, it was with our full team, plus Piper. The seven of us breezed through the terminal, only stopping to pick up the keys to our waiting vehicles.
"Do you think we'll have time to check out some of the snow-related activities?" Wyatt asked, hopefully.
"No," said Lucy.
"Really? I've never been on a snowmobile and I thoughtâ"
"No," repeated Lucy.
Wyatt looked momentarily crestfallen. Then he perked back up. "How about a little sight-seeing? You know, the original pioneers built this elaborate cathedral-looking thingy. I mean seriously, this was like the Wild West and they went and made this entireâ"
"No," said Lucy.
Wyatt pouted. "But it's historical and educational. It will help me grow as a person."
"That's what the internet is for," said Lucy, arriving at the two Chevy Tahoes we'd rented. We tossed our bags in the back, the largest space taken up by Morgan's pelican case full of goodies. While he was still buzzing with magical enhancements, those didn't include offensive weapons. If he wanted to put the hurt on somebody, he still needed his gear.
"Alpine is thirty-five miles south," said Lucy. "But this isn't LA and traffic is light, so we'll be there in about a half-hour." She looked at Piper, who was driving the second car. "Stay close and keep alert, Utah drivers are crazy."
"It can't be worse than SoCal," I said.
Lucy gave me a serious look. "Trust me, it's like Thunderdome out there."
"Shotgun!" Wyatt shouted, blinking to his chosen seat.
Lucy was correct about how quick the trip took and the insane way people drove their cars. It didn't matter if the driver was a guy dressed in business-casual or a soccer-mom with a car full of kids, they all drove the same way.
"It's like they think they're in the Indy 500," I said, as Lucy avoided yet another car that decided to abruptly change lanes, causing us and three other cars to quickly throw our brakes on to avoid a collision.
"I've only driven through the state a handful of times," said Lucy. "It's the only place I've ever been tempted to start flinging spells at jackass drivers."
After a few more miles I
